Annual trail maintenance project will lessen dust and enhance recreational experience
Weekday access to Waterton Canyon will be closed from Monday, June 3, through Friday, June 14, for Denver Water’s annual dust mitigation project. Neither the parking lot at the canyon’s entrance nor the canyon will be accessible during this time. Waterton Canyon is planned to be open on Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, for weekend recreation.
As a working facility, there are times when operations and maintenance projects create unsafe conditions for the public, prompting a closure to trail access. Denver Water performs maintenance projects like this one to provide for a better experience throughout the canyon by creating optimal conditions for a family-friendly hiking and biking experience.
“Waterton Canyon is a popular recreation destination and we recognize the closure is an inconvenience,” said Brandon Ransom, manager of recreation for Denver Water. “Closing the canyon for a short time for maintenance helps keep the road in good condition for the rest of the year. A smooth road surface allows for a more enjoyable recreation experience in Waterton Canyon.”
Hikers and bikers on the Colorado Trail should seek alternative access points, which can be found at www.coloradotrail.org, during this time.

Note: Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, are planned as contingency days in case extra time is needed for the project due to weather or unforeseen issues. Additional communications will be sent out if that is the case and closure information can be found at @DenverWater on Twitter and at denverwater.org.
