Summer Watering Rules are in Effect

Denver Water’s Annual Outdoor/Summer Watering Rules went into effect May 1 and continue through October 1.

By following these rules throughout the summer, you can help preserve reservoir levels and minimize the need for additional watering restrictions. Colorado’s climate is warming, and it’s more important than ever to use water efficiently.

  • Delay turning on irrigation systems until after the last spring freeze to protect hoses, spigots and sprinkler heads.
  • Take advantage of the natural moisture provided by spring and summer rain and turn off your sprinklers for a few days.
  • Adjust your watering times each month, with shorter times during cooler months and longer times during hotter months.
  • Adjust the minutes per zone based on the amount of rainfall received, the type of grass or plants in the zone, sunny or shady locations and other landscape characteristics.

The watering rules incorporate best practices for efficient outdoor water use that will help keep your landscape healthy.

Follow these seven simple summer watering rules from May 1 to Oct. 1.

  1. Water during cooler times of the day — lawn watering is NOT allowed between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  2. Water no more than three days per week.
  3. Do not allow water to pool in gutters, streets and alleys.
  4. Do not waste water by letting it spray on concrete and asphalt.
  5. Repair leaking sprinkler systems within 10 days.
  6. Do not irrigate while it is raining or during high winds.
  7. Use a hose nozzle with a shut-off valve when washing your car.
